A user ban is an enforcement action that blocks a specific viewer from accessing an individual broadcaster chat room or using a live streaming platform altogether. Room hosts and automated moderation systems issue bans to stop harassment, eliminate spam, enforce community guidelines, and protect the safety of live performers.
How Moderation Bans Operate
Enforcement actions typically occur at two distinct tiers depending on the severity of the infraction:
- Broadcaster room bans: A performer or room moderator removes an individual viewer from a specific stream. The blocked user loses the ability to view the stream, post in chat, send tips, or interact with private shows in that channel, though their account remains active across the rest of the site.
- Platform level account suspensions: Site administrators permanently terminate or temporarily suspend an account for severe violations such as payment fraud, hate speech, underage presence, or systemic non-compliance with terms of service. This prevents access to all streams across the entire domain.
Room Bans Compared to Chat Mutes
Broadcasters must distinguish between a full room ban and a temporary chat mute or kick. A chat mute merely silences a participant, preventing text messages while allowing them to continue viewing the broadcast and spending tokens. A kick disconnects the user from the room temporarily but permits re-entry after a brief cooldown. In contrast, a user ban completely excludes the individual from the room interface until the broadcaster manually removes the restriction or the ban duration expires.
Applying appropriate moderation levels helps streamers maintain a secure, compliant chat environment without needlessly eliminating paying viewers who simply require a brief reminder of room etiquette.
