Frame Rate

Frame rate is the frequency at which an imaging sensor captures and displays consecutive individual images, expressed as frames per second (fps). In vehicle recording systems and dash cams, frame rate directly governs how smoothly moving objects appear during video playback.

How Frame Rate Works and Affects Storage

A video recording system produces the illusion of continuous motion by recording static image frames in rapid succession. Standard automotive video recorders operate at specific frame rates that balance visual fidelity with ongoing operating overhead:

  • 30 fps: The industry baseline for real-time video capture, delivering smooth playback while keeping data bitrates and memory card wear manageable.
  • 60 fps: A higher capture frequency that records twice as many frames per second, reducing motion blur on fast-moving vehicles and high-speed highway traffic.
  • 1 to 5 fps (Time-Lapse / Parking Mode): A low capture rate used when the vehicle is parked to minimize power draw and preserve storage space over long durations.

Increasing capture frequency from 30 fps to 60 fps doubles the raw image data generated by the optical sensor each second. Even with modern video compression formats such as H.264 or H.265 (HEVC), higher frame rates require higher bitrates to maintain picture clarity. This increase accelerates storage consumption on microSD cards and requires higher-endurance media to prevent write bottlenecks and premature card degradation.

Frame Rate Versus Shutter Speed

Frame rate is often confused with shutter speed, but each controls a different aspect of video capture. Frame rate dictates how many frames are captured in one second, setting temporal resolution. In contrast, shutter speed defines the duration of time the camera sensor is exposed to light for each individual frame. A dash cam recording at 60 fps with a slow shutter speed will still produce blurry license plates if exposure time is too long, whereas an adequate shutter speed combined with appropriate fps ensures legible detail during playback.
