Choosing the Right Bitrate for Streaming
Broadcasters should select a bitrate that matches both their target stream resolution and their sustained upload bandwidth. Allocating inadequate bitrate results in compression artifacts, pixelation, and blurry motion during fast-paced scenes. Conversely, pushing a bitrate higher than the network connection can reliably sustain causes dropped frames, buffer stalls, and connection dropouts for viewers.
A practical baseline requires setting your encoding bitrate to consume no more than 70 to 80 percent of your consistent, tested internet upload speed. This reserve headroom prevents transient network congestion from degrading the broadcast. Common configuration tiers include:
- 720p at 30 fps: 2,500 to 4,000 kbps for standard high-definition broadcasts with moderate movement.
- 1080p at 30 fps: 3,500 to 5,000 kbps for clear desktop capture and general camera feeds.
- 1080p at 60 fps: 4,500 to 8,000 kbps for fluid high-motion video and detailed fast-action content.

Bitrate Versus Resolution
Resolution defines the physical canvas dimensions in pixels (such as 1920 by 1080), whereas bitrate determines the amount of digital detail encoded into those pixels every second. Streaming at 1080p with a heavily restricted 1,500 kbps allocation will often look significantly worse than a clean 720p stream running at 3,500 kbps because the encoder must discard critical visual information to fit the tight data ceiling. Matching data throughput to canvas dimensions ensures clear, consistent playback.
